From Cinque Terre we made our way to Nice, which we used as a base for day trips. The first one was to Monaco and we ended up there the day before a Grand Prix of historic cars, was cool to see the race track and we got to see all the vintage cars that would be participating - Paul took plenty of photos of those!
The next day we took a train to Cannes - again we arrived just before a major event, this time the Film Festival which was due to start in a few days. Was cool to see all the movie company hoardings going up and the party tents getting prepared, although it was very much a case of how the other half lives - the super yachts in the harbour were pretty mind blowing. We want one.
Nice itself was a pretty town and we were nice and close to the main street that led to the sea, although we were there over a holiday weekend so was crazy busy.
From Nice we headed up to Avignon, which is a pretty walled town. We checked out the massive Palace of the Popes and went for a long walk to the Villenueve, an equally old area on the other side of the Rhone river. We would have liked to have seen more of Provence, but that damn public holiday meant buses weren´t really running so we were somewhat stranded! In Avignon we had a very French afternoon tea of Nutella crepes washed down with Orangina - mmmm, so good!
We decided to save a bit of cash and catch a bus from Avignon to Barcelona, but we were somewhat dreading the 8 hour trip, this turned out to be unfounded and it was actually really enjoyable. The scenery was amazing from little medieval Provencal towns to vast wild flower dotted planes and then up into the Pyranees mountains. We had a bit of a hairy moment at the Spanish border though, when the guard took our passports and disappeared with them for a good 15 minutes. Our stomachs were definitely lurching as we imagined the worst and feared we were about to be ordered off the bus for an interrogation, but eventually they were returned to us (they must have given them a thorough going over!) and we were back on the road.
