After a long and painful overnight bus ride from Barcelona (we finally fell asleep about 40 mins before we arrived - not fun!) we found ourselves in Madrid at 6am on a Saturday morning, not the best time to arrive in a city notorious for late night partying as the place was deserted!
We had no info on where to find our accommodation but the nearest metro station so we made our way there hoping to find a map, but sadly couldn´t. Luckily we found a solitary lady on the street and we could make out her Spanish enough to figure out which direction to head in! Of course, our room wasn´t ready till midday so we had to start our Madrid experience feeling dirty and gross in our clothes from the day before!
Luckily things improved from there, we´d lucked out in our timing and found out the city had been celebrating a major festival a few days prior and there were events continuing into the weekend. Saturday night found us at a beautifully manicured park enjoying a water and light show (complete with fireworks) which took place over a large ornamental pond. It was so spectacular, like nothing we´ve ever seen. All around the city were free concerts and the like and the atmosphere was awesome.
Sunday most of Madrid seems to head for El Rastro, a massive sprawling market which we bagged a few bargains at (I can´t get enough of the pashminas over here, so pretty!)
Next time I´ll fill you in on our day trip to Segovia and the infamous ´knife´incident!
