On Sunday we dragged ourselves away from the pool and hired a quad bike (think Britney Spears on her recent Bahamas vaction... yep, I still keep up with the gossip!). We were a little wary to begin with (it was a bit freaky driving on the road with our putty 50cc motor and cars speeding past!) but we quickly got our confidence up... although by 'we' I mean Paul, I was a bit of a wimp and only drove around the back roads and carparks! And yep mum, we both wore helmets!
Our first stop was Kalmari beach, where after a quick coffee we found a position on the 'sand' which was actually tiny black pebbles (very hot to sit on, even through a towel!). The water was crystal clear and fairly warm so we had a really nice swim, then spent a while reading on the beach to dry off before our next stop. After grabbing some gyros (our new favourite food, kind of like a kebab, but made from a pita bread and includes, oddly enough, french fries!) we made the drive to Perissa beach, which turned out to be quite a distance away. It was incredible getting out around the island and we got to see some amazing views.
Later in the evening we headed to the north of the island to Oia - the picture postcard town you associate with Santorini, in fact it's pretty much your archetypical Greek Island village. We took the wrong road up there, and by 'wrong' road, I mean long road, which meant we got to enjoy an incredible drive hugging the island's coastline while the late afternoon sun sparkled over the ocean - it was just breathtaking! We had dinner at Oia (gyros again... we love 'em!) and watched the sunset before driving home over a rather perilous mountain road, which once again had amazing views, including one point at the top where we could see the sea on either side of us.
With all that excitement over, it was back to the pool and the sangria on Monday, then before we knew it Tuesday arrived and we had to leave for our flight back to Athens - I actually had a tear in my eye as our plane took off! Santorini really was the most amazing place and we loved every second of it.
After our night in Athens, we were back to the airport to fly to London. Of course, after joking about having another 3 hour delay, we actually ended up with one! Grrrrr. Was even worse this time as we were sitting on the plane the whole three hours, so it made our flight feel doubly long. But we finally arrived here and are looking forward to a bit more site seeing tomorrow, before we see the Foo Fighters Friday - yay!
